Applied Mathematics and Statistics Graduate School Applicants



Thank you for your interest in graduate studies at the department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Stony Brook. Please read this entire page before you apply. General application information can be obtained at the application website.
All transcripts MUST be mailed directly to the Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department (see address below). In addition, a legible, scanned copy of the transcript must be uploaded onto the application website. Recommendation letters can be sent via the online system or by hard copy. If you choose to send the recommendation letters via hard copy, please send these letters directly to the Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department in signed, sealed envelopes.

For admission to graduate study in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, the minimum requirements are:

   A. A bachelor's degree in mathematics, a natural science, engineering, an applied science, or a social science with a strong mathematics background.


   B. A minimum overall cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, and at least a 3.0 average in all courses in pertinent or related fields.


   C. Results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test. International students must also obtain TOEFL scores (minimum Total score of 85 or better for MS admission and 90 or better for PhD admission, no exceptions). GRE and TOEFL scores should be reported by ETS (Educational Testing System) to the Graduate School. The Institutional Code needed is 2548 and the Department code is 0702 (for GRE only).


   D. Three letters of reference and all transcripts of undergraduate and/or graduate study completed.

Among the five graduate tracks the statistics track is currently offered at SUNY Korea. Applications files are reviewed by the department's Graduate Admissions Committee. Upon the recommendation of the Admissions Committee, the Graduate Program Director will authorize an offer of admission to either our M.S. or Ph.D. program. All students admitted to the doctoral program will automatically be considered for financial support.


Provisional Admission: Occasionally, students will marginal grades but signs of greater academic potential are offered provisional admission to our graduate program. Their admission offer will stipulate that they must take courses in their first semester and earn at least a B average in them. Upon satisfying these conditions, they will be allowed to matriculate into regular M.S or Ph.D. student status.





The majority of students are admitted beginning in fall semesters. We do admit a small number of PhD students and a reasonable number of M.S. students for the spring semester. Applications must be submitted prior to the application deadline:


•  Fall Admission: June 30

•  Spring Admission: January 15


Late applications may not receive full consideration, especially for financial support.
